In a study published in the journal Sleep in 2011, Stanford researchers had collegiate basketball players extend their sleep, and objective measurements showed they averaged 110.9 minutes more sleep per night than at baseline. Their 282-foot sprint times fell from 16.2 to 15.5 seconds, free-throw accuracy rose from 7.9 to 8.8 made shots out of 10, and three-point accuracy rose from 10.2 to 11.6 made out of 15 — roughly a nine percent improvement in shooting on both. Every product below is scored on six metrics, 0-10 each, with the weighting described on how we review. The criteria specific to this category:

  • Recovery evidence specifically. This is the heaviest-weighted metric and it is narrower than it sounds. Plenty of supplements are worth taking for general health and score badly here, because the question on this page is whether the research supports the supplement for muscle recovery — reduced soreness, faster restoration of performance between sessions, better repair of training damage. We reward supplements with repeated human trials pointing at those outcomes, and we mark down supplements whose recovery reputation rests on mechanism stories, in-vitro work, or manufacturer-funded studies.
  • Dose and form that match the studies. A supplement only works at the dose and in the form that was actually tested.
